Evolutionary Cell Biology

The vast majority of eukaryotic diversity and evolutionary innovation is found among protists. We are analysing the evolutionary relationships and progression of individual lineages in concert, which allows us to identify homologous cellular structures and key proteins using phylogenetic methods as a support. Key aspects, such as for example the evolution of protein targeting into organelles or the expansion of intermediate filament-like protein families in protists as a mean to evolve unique single-cell phenotypes and buffer external sheering forces, are in the focus of our combined analysis. Both of these topics have recently become important to understand the evolutionary dynamics of major eukaryotic groups.
